Week 10 Recap

Game of the Day: The Jaguars and Texans had one of the best endings to a game all season so they get my nod for Game of the Week. At halftime it didn’t look like this would be a candidate with the Texans trailing 17-3. The Texans turned it on in the second half and came all the way back to tie it up at 24 with just over 4 minutes to play. The Texans had the ball around mid field as time was about to expire but fumbled and the Jags recovered. After a 5 yard pass to Mercedes Lewis that set up Jags quarterback David Garrard for the Hail Mary attempt as time expired. Mike Thomas caught the ball at the one yard line off of a deflection from a Texans defender and ran it into the end zone. The Hail Mary worked and the Jags escaped with a victory. Garrard was spectacular throwing for 342 yards and 2 touchdowns and Maurice Jones-Drew also had a very good game reaching the 100 yard rushing mark to go along with 2 touchdowns.
Fantasy Stud: In a losing effort Chiefs wide receiver Dwayne Bowe had a fantasy feat against the Broncos secondary. Bowe had 13 receptions to go with his 186 yards and 2 touchdowns. The Chiefs fell behind big early on and were forced to throw almost the entire game. If you’re not a Chiefs fan and have Bowe on your team this was the best thing that could have happened as he was targeted often.
Fantasy Dud: Payton Manning gets the fantasy dud of the week. Manning for the second straight week was ineffective and it looks like all of the injuries to the skilled positions might be starting to affect Manning. Running backs Joseph Addai and Mike Hart were both inactive along with receivers Dallas Clark, Austin Collie, Blaire White, and Anthony Gonzalez. The Colts were always ahead so it didn’t look like they were too intent on passing all over the place but for those who drafted Manning early on in their drafts they expect 300+ passing yards with 2-3 touchdowns every week. Manning only threw for 185 yards 0 touchdowns but at least he didn’t throw any interceptions.
Surprising performance: The Dallas Cowboys were the surprising performance on Sunday. They went into the New Giants Stadium and completely dominated the first place Giants who were once of the hottest teams in the entire NFL. Interim Head Coach Jason Garrett must have really had a good week of practice and had the Cowboys ready to go up against the Giants. It was only 3 weeks ago that the Giants put up 45 on the Cowboys in Dallas so the Cowboys were looking to avenge that defeat. John Kitnas was impressive throwing for 327 yards on only 13 completions to go along with 3 touchdowns and only 1 interception. Dez Bryant continued his stellar rookie season by 3 balls for 104 yards and a touchdown with the bulk of those yards coming on a 46 yard touchdown reception. Felix Jones also made his biggest contribution of the season by scoring on a 71 yard screen pass. The Cowboys defense held one of the best runners in the league to only 73 yards on 20 carries which is less than 4 yards a carry.
Disappointing performance: The Steelers were really disappointing to watch on Sunday. Going into their game with the Patriots they knew the Ravens lost a heartbreaker on Thursday night so they had a chance to take the lead in the division. At home against the Patriots you think they would be ready to play but they fell behind early. After 3 quarters they trailed 23-3 failing to establish any offensive rhythm. They got it going in the 4th quarter scoring 23 points but it was already too late and they couldn’t stop the Patriots at any point. The Patriots scored 16 in the 4th quarter and squashed any chance the Steelers had of making a great comeback. The Steelers host the suddenly hot Raiders next Sunday so they have no time to sulk over the defeat.
What had everyone buzzing? I already touched base on it earlier in my Game of the Week but the Hail Mary pass to win the game for the Jaguars definitely had everyone buzzing on Sunday and into Monday morning. I rarely get a chance to see a play like that succeed but everything just happened to fall into place. The Jaguars said they practice that particular play every week but they never actually throw the football they just run through the motions and prepare for what might happen in that situation. The defender on the Texans made the right play as all players are taught to swat the ball down rather than go to catch it. The defender batted it down but it fell right into the hands of Mike Thomas who then crossed the end zone and celebrated the victory. It truly an amazing play to end a game.
Injury impact of the day: The Dolphins decided to go with Chad Pennington this week and two plays into the game the often injured quarterback went out with a shoulder injury. Later in the game former starting quarterback Chad Henne went out with an injury. Tyler Thigpen came in and threw a touchdown pass in 1 of his 6 attempts. The Dolphins escaped with a win but it remains to be seen who will be starting in the coming weeks.
